Dr Carla Rita Santos Costa Lança obtained her PhD in Public Health, specialization in health promotion, from National School of Public Health of The New University of Lisbon, Portugal in 2014. She also achieved a Master Degree in Social-Organizational Intervention in Health from the University of Évora and Lisbon School of Health Technology (ESTeSL), Portugal in 2010. In 2007 ESTeSL conferred her with a Bachelor Degree (Hons) in Orthoptics (Vision Sciences).
She has been teaching since 2008 in the field of Visual Sciences, particularly Orthoptics at ESTeSL. Her areas of experience are related with strabismus, binocular vision, low vision and research methodologies for the BSc level. While teaching in Orthoptics she maintained clinical practice part-time managing paediatric patient’s eye care.
Areas of research expertise include vision sciences, public health and more recently learning methodologies. She is also involved in multidisciplinary research studies about visual function, visual perception and image evaluation in radiology/radiography. In 2015 she joined the Public Health Research Center (CISP) from the National School of Public Health and the Environmental and Health research group (GIAS) from ESTeSL.
She contributed to research activity with publications in academic peer-reviews journals (n=17) and presented several conference papers and seminars (n=73). As member of the Education Committee of The Orthoptistes de la Communauté Européenne (OCE) she is working in a European research study involving 9 different countries with the aim of reviewing the content of orthoptic education across Europe.
